Dead Skin Cells Forms On My Scalp, Ears & Nose

Question:
I have dry skin I'm assuming. Every few days dead skin cell reforms on my scalp and in my ears and a little bit on the side right side of my nose. what is the best way to deal with this, is there even a way?
Thanks,
Mel

Answer:
This chronic, hereditary condition is called seborrhea and caused by an oily scalp and hyperkeratosis, meaning dead cells form too rapidly and build up. It gets worse in the winter months and when you're stressed out. It's the adult cousin of the cradle cap you see on newborns, again caused by oiliness and dead cell build up, not dryness.

Shampoo more often...every day if dead cells build up fast, and no less often than weekly. Allowing dead cells to thicken will cause extreme itching and hair loss. Lather up and apply dandruff shampoo to the scalp and ears. Let it remain on the scalp for ten minutes and then massage (don't scratch) for two minutes. Rinse well and apply conditioner for 5 minutes, then rinse and blot dry. Don't rub. Don't scratch your scalp or allow your stylist to do so. This just causes dead cells to build up faster. The same goes for vigorously brushing your hair and scalp. When hair is dry, apply a hydrocortisone ointment to the scalp (and ears if needed). Do this twice daily, whether or not you shampoo.

Seborrheic dermatitis appears on face, which is usually oily, extremely sensitive and often acne prone. The face should be cleansed with a mild unscented cleanser and lukewarm water. If it makes your skin tight and dry at all, it's the wrong cleanser for you. Don't use bar soaps, acne washes, scrubs, toners containing alcohol or perfumed products. Pat dry and apply a greaseless 1% hydrocortisone lotion to the sides of the nose, inner checks and brows. During the day, use a sunscreen formulated for sensitive skin.
